BBC Bloggers Ride!

I know this might be a bit late but as they say Better late than never right? In truth it's been a crazy few weeks from late shipments to crazy market days, however that will have to wait some other time.

On Saturday Nov 10th we invited our favorite style bloggers to cruise on our new summer range of  Icebergs and Southends, in Centennial park and cap it off with a nice little picnic to relax and shoot the breeze with these fun bikers. It was a great day that ended with sunshine, with everyone looking fabulous on their ride (especially with their personalized number plate) there were stories exchanged and all had a laugh.

We first like to thank our style bloggers The Chronicles of her, Citizens of the world, Hell in Tokyo, Watermelon crush, The Bonafied bed fellows, for taking time out to join us. We hope to see you around in the near future. Also like to thank these generous peeps at Monteiths Crushed Cider & Angostura bitters for the refreshments, and sweet kiss cake shop for the delicious Macaroons. and last but not least Katie and the girls from Elise Garland Public Relations for setting up such a great event. Check out the photos below.

Victoria's Secret Bicycle Girl

Here's a bit of excitement for a boring Tuesday afternoon.

Last weeks Victoria's Secret show featured one model dressed as a bicycle, yup a bicycle! Not that we're complaining, she looked super hot. Justin Bieber is looking a little confused though..

MOve over boys, Mo Sista's in town

Bondi resident Charlotte Connell has committed to wearing or drawing on a mo every day this month to raise awareness and money for men's health. We caught up with her to see how she's getting on..

BBC:      Your dad is your mo-tivation for doing Movember, tell us a bit about that?

CC:   My dad is my surfing buddy, my mentor and best friend. He has sported the most spectacular moustache for more than 45 years. But now, my Dad is undergoing chemotherapy he may lose that marvellous moustache and hopefully along with it the prostate cancer that has spread to his bones. Ever the optimist my dad, when faced with the news from the doctor, said “great, I’ll save money on haircuts”.

Inspired by my father’s strength, confidence and courage I’m wearing a moustache every day of Movember to raise money and more so, awareness of prostate cancer and men’s health.

I’m the first female, known as a Mosista, to attempt this in Australia. I figure if I can wear a moustache and suffer the ridicule, stares, and itchy upper lip, men can go get a health check and hopefully not have to lose their moustache too.

BBC:      You're almost half way through 30 days of Movember, which mo has had the best response so far?

CC:   I think the human handlebar mo went down quite well, but alarmingly it matched my own hair so well that it was a little too believable. My personal favourite, and I did manage to score a date wearing it, was the Tom Sellick/Rockstar Mo, it’s also the one that reminds me most of my dad.

BBC:      You've been surfing for over 15 years, does wearing the mo improve your performance?

CC:    Not sure about performance but it definitely helps getting waves. Also the reaction I get out there is awesome, everyone is really positive and congratulating me on my Mo style and for supporting the cause. On land people are sometimes a little nervous to say anything, like asking someone when are they due when they’re not even pregnant, I think sometimes they can be afraid to ask. Mostly I just smile and volunteer the ‘It’s for Movember’ line.

BBC:      Which local bars are people likely to spot you wetting your whistle/mo?

CC:   I practical live next door to the Crossing, I also like Bondi Hardware and can’t resist the prices or the view at North Bondi RSL but then always seem to end up at the Bucket List. I also have a lumberjack Mo picked out that I want to take for a whiskey or two at Shady Pines.

BBC:     Have you been on any dates this month? How did that go?

CC:   I’ve actually been on a couple. One went ok, a bit too much food ended up on the Mo and the other didn’t go so well, I think the Mo is a good litmus paper test for men. The guy politely informed me that the reason people were staring at me wasn’t because I had a bit of fur stuck to my lip, it was because I looked like a pretty tranny – nice! At least he said I was a pretty one.

BBC:     What's next for a mo sista when December roles around?

CC:   I imagine I will have a great Mo tan on my upper lip. I think I will really miss the Mo and the reason it gives me to chat to strangers about a good cause and smile at every person I walk past. I’ll have to come up with a new and creative way to support my family through this.

BBC:     How can people donate?

CC:   You can donate by visiting http://mosista.co/wuffy and for every donation over $20 or for every man who gets a health check this month will get the privilege of choosing a style of Mo for me to wear. To follow my progress through Movember you can go to https://twitter.com/chachiconnell  or perhaps Tumblr is more your thing http://chachi-connell.tumblr.com/  and of course Instagram username Chachiconnell
If you want to find out more about Movember check out http://au.movember.com/about/  it’s all about changing the face of men’s health.

Everyday Fantasia - This Thursday!!

At 107 Projects on Thu Nov 1, Sydney’s artistic underground will be presented as a visual fantasia by emerging curator Hollie Black and emerging charity collective the YCF. For one-night-only, the city's tagging turncoats will be playing by some of the art game’s rules.

In Everyday Fantasia, a group exhibition that features works by street artists and illustrators Aldous Massie, Alex Lehours, Andisk, Beastman, Bridge Stehli, Dale Bigeni, Daysone, Dboe, Deb, Edgarr, Faz, Gerald Leung, J'aime Fazackerley, Jo
dee Knowles, Jumbo, Kalis, KON, Nmbr19, Phil James, Pigeonboy, RJ Williams, Ronstoppable, Rotes, VarsOne, Skel, Simon Lovelace, Will Lynes and many more. The artists have taken the energy that they inject into Sydney’s streets, signage and residents’ skin, and propelled it through the doors of a new creative space.

Black wants this exhibition to be a chance for all art outsiders to get in the game – on both sides of the canvas – so the exhibition is an opportunity for the Young Centenary Foundation’s supporter network of young professionals to buy their first artwork. And we hear John Kaldor’s $35 million art collection started with a $50 painting, so it could be the start of something big.

The works will available for auction for one night only and will start at the $50 mark and climbing up from there.

On the night you’ll also find an Everyday Fantasia pop-up shop pedaling the freshest Merchandise and limited edition zines, prints and tees by Daysone, KON, Notorious & Co, Alex Lehours, Big Village Records, Phil James, Beach Burrito Company, 567 King and heaps more, with a percentage of all sales going toward the Centenary Institute.

The commission from all works sold will go directly towards funding the life-saving research of the Centenary Institute, and Ash & Andy of Death Strobe Records will keep the party moving as the pieces sell.

Our friends at Beach Burrito Company will help keep your taste buds happy on the night and there will also be an open pop-up bar thanks to event sponsors VODKA O, Cascade and Bulmers PLUS a raffle boasting prizes including a double pass to Harvest Festival, a Bondi Beach Cruisers bike, Big Village clothing and a $250 voucher to Bondi Love.

Scary Wheels

To get you in the mood for Halloween next week...

How does a group of seemingly normal people decide to spend a weekend together, riding bikes around and around the grounds of a brewery, falling off those bikes, and dressing up in ways that reveal their inner weird adolescent? Halloween weekend in Bend is the biggest, best-dressed anaerobic party in cycling North America..

Festival of the Winds 2012

On Sunday 9 September the skies over Bondi Beach will come alive with hundreds of kites of all shapes and sizes from local and international kite-makers and flyers.

Festival of the Winds is Australia’s largest and most exciting kite flying festival and it promises to be a great day out for the whole family.

International kite flying guests this year include Jan and Yolanda Van Leeuwen from the Netherlands, as well as the fabulous Delta, Free Form and fighter kites from the Australian Kite Flyer Society members who’ll be showcasing their own designs along with kite designs from India, Malaysia, China and Japan.

It’s not just the experts who can fly their kites...everyone is invited to come and fly their own!
Kites can be purchased from one of the kite stalls in the park, or you can make your own at one of our kite making workshops. If you fancy the experience of flying yourself, try a ride on the Pacific Fly Motion Bungy trampoline.

In addition to kite flying, there’ll be a multicultural entertainment program throughout the day with great music, dance and kid’s shows with hilarious MC Manik presenting on the main stage on the day.

Acts include, Pak Hok Kung Fu International, who’ll be celebrating the Year of the Dragon with their Kung Fu mastery and famous Lion Dance; The Asthmatix, a local hybrid hip hop trio with soaring fiddles and Hebrew humour; Freeman Dancers (Wiradjuri), Australian Indigenous traditional dance and music from the Wiradjuri Nation; Afrokings featuring Moussa Diakete from Mali performing Afro, Latin, Funk and dance grooves; and, El Orqueston, performing the Festival finale with a salsa party featuring a 12 piece live band and Cuban dancers.

There’ll be other activities and entertainment including free dance workshops in African Dance, Capoeira, Zumba, Salsa and Tango, with the ever popular Tango Milonga at the end of the day.

Children will be kept entertained with pony rides, fun slides, leaping castles, face painting, animal farm, wandering minstrels, jugglers, stilt walkers, puppeteers, clowns, and craft workshops.

The Red Baron will be soaring high over the Bondi seas, diving and twirling in an aerobatic display, and you can lose yourself in our Amazing Maze.

The day is sure to build an appetite, so there’ll be multicultural food stalls with food and drink from all over the world.

Festival of the Winds, Sunday 9 September at Bondi Pavilion from 11am.

The cardboard bicycle

This is a great story about a man who had a passion, a simple idea and with all great success story perseverance. Izhar Gafni is a designer who became an inventor because he loved to create and turn materials that had a specific use and turn it into something new.

Bicycles are his hobby, his passion, his "soul" so it was fitting that a trip to the bicycle store for some spare parts was the catalyst to what would be his greatest invention. After overhearing a story of a guy who built a canoe out of card board his restless mind went to overdrive and asked the question "why can't you make a bicycle out of cardboard as well?"

He soon realised that there was no precedents of creating a bike out of cardboard and even when he sought advice form three respected engineers he was told it was impossible. Undeterred Izhar set of to work anyway with the support for his wife, he built several prototypes each time finding new methods of working with the material and after several attempts he succeeded in creating a bike that was strong enough to hold a person of up to 300 pounds its can even withstand water and humidity. He used origami folding principals to strength the frame and create the wheels, seat and handlebar and the results? well it's nothing short of genius. check out the vid below.
