On Sunday 9 September the skies over Bondi Beach will come alive with hundreds of kites of all
shapes and sizes from local and international kite-makers and flyers.
Festival of the Winds is Australia’s largest and most exciting kite flying festival and it promises to be a great day out for the whole family.
International kite flying guests this year include Jan and Yolanda Van Leeuwen from the Netherlands, as well as the fabulous Delta, Free Form and fighter kites from the Australian Kite Flyer Society members who’ll be showcasing their own designs along with kite designs from India, Malaysia, China and Japan.
It’s not just the experts who can fly their kites...everyone is invited to come and fly their own!
Kites can be purchased from one of the kite stalls in the park, or you can make your own at one
of our kite making workshops. If you fancy the experience of flying yourself, try a ride on the
Pacific Fly Motion Bungy trampoline.
In addition to kite flying, there’ll be a multicultural entertainment program throughout the day
with great music, dance and kid’s shows with hilarious MC Manik presenting on the main stage
on the day.
Acts include, Pak Hok Kung Fu International, who’ll be celebrating the Year of the Dragon with
their Kung Fu mastery and famous Lion Dance; The Asthmatix, a local hybrid hip hop trio with
soaring fiddles and Hebrew humour; Freeman Dancers (Wiradjuri), Australian Indigenous
traditional dance and music from the Wiradjuri Nation; Afrokings featuring Moussa Diakete from
Mali performing Afro, Latin, Funk and dance grooves; and, El Orqueston, performing the
Festival finale with a salsa party featuring a 12 piece live band and Cuban dancers.
There’ll be other activities and entertainment including free dance workshops in African Dance, Capoeira, Zumba, Salsa and Tango, with the ever popular Tango Milonga at the end of the day.
Children will be kept entertained with pony rides, fun slides, leaping castles, face painting, animal farm, wandering minstrels, jugglers, stilt walkers, puppeteers, clowns, and craft workshops.
The Red Baron will be soaring high over the Bondi seas, diving and twirling in an aerobatic display, and you can lose yourself in our Amazing Maze.
The day is sure to build an appetite, so there’ll be multicultural food stalls with food and drink from all over the world.
Festival of the Winds, Sunday 9 September at Bondi Pavilion from 11am.
